The crowd, mostly young and game for this sort of thing, thrive on the carefully rendered list of cocktails with oh-so-clever names... The chef, Mehdi Brunet-Benkritly, of Fedora, is a trend hound who takes of-the-moment ingredients and gives them a twist. The menu of snacks, sushi bites, and small and large plates is full of oddities, ambitious, overwhelmingly rich, and delicious in turn. » Read Full Review

...Along the way there are terrific satisfactions...And there are lovely little grace notes...There are, in fact, very few ways to put together a balanced meal at Chez Sardine. This may be the common curse shared by fat-on-fat cuisine, Asian stoner food and small-plates dining: When diners expect to be wowed by every bite, why would chefs waste their time on dishes that are meant to be supporting players? But we need those things, too, if we are supposed to get out of bed tomorrow and do this all again. After a certain point, even stoners and foie gras eaters crave a little restraint. » Read Full Review

Chez Sardine Sells Fine Sushi at Moderate Price - ...Against all odds, most of it works...Chez Sardine has no pre-theater prix-fixe, no tasting menu...Also no dishes over $22. The only dessert is maple pudding with syrup and rice crisps. It’s free and it’s awesome...Sushi is easy here: Order everything...Nigiri ($4-$7) are better than any I’ve had at Blue Ribbon or other mid-range raw fish restaurants...My only gripe is with the rice, which isn’t as sublime as the fish; you don’t get the warm rice/cool flesh contrast that makes for transcendental tastings... » Read Full Review

...His new project, Chez Sardine, is his most daring by far—with a quirky name and a wacky theme—asking of his regulars great leaps of faith...And a buzzy crowd, waiting as long as two hours for a hand-carved walnut booth, have made this strange hybrid one of the most coveted new tables of 2013 so far...But Stulman—a virtuoso now in staging a kinetic mise en scène with kitchen cred—knows how to conjure enough off-kilter electricity to fill seats for this offbeat cuisine... » Read Full Review

...Seven tables, a bar, and a sushi bar vie for floor space with customers waiting impatiently to get seats...The theme of Chez Sardine is also somewhat confused. The place is described as an izakaya...Stulman's obsession with elaborate sushi disqualifies Chez Sardine as a real izakaya, and so do the invented cocktails, tiny menu, and high prices. But so what? Chez Sardine often diddles spectacularly with Japanese food, via chef Mehdi Brunet-Benkritly...On the other hand, you're eating some of the most interesting sushi in town » Read Full Review

The Underground Gourmet: At Chez Sardine, a Playful Approach to Japanese-Inspired Tapas - ...And that’s just one of the excellent dishes at Chez Sardine you might consider worthy of a good death-row binge. The menu is full of all sorts of succulent things...But where this kitchen really shines is in the seafood department, both raw and cooked, and in the unexpected offcuts...Heads and collars aside, the most impressive thing about Chez Sardine might be its wonderfully unconventional sushi » Read Full Review
